How she started to study dance,what kinds of dance she was trained in, and her early dance career are somewhat mysterious. Therefore,this paper examines these topics, including the process with which she created her own dance and performancesespecially in New York.The materials I use for this paper are an unpublished memoir of Isadora’s brother, Raymond Duncan,which a descendent of Isadora Duncan gave me, and historical newspapers, photos, magazines, pamphlets andother primary resources.Isadora wrote in My Life:“…it is certainly to this wild untrammeled life of my childhood that I owe theinspiration of the dance I created, which was but the expression of freedom.”In spite of this claim, though, Idiscovered Isadora learned Irish folk dance, social dance, gymnastics, Indian clubs (a type of exercise), theDelsarte system and ballet. Most people think that she improvised her dances and that she did not studydance seriously. However, she obviously experienced many kinds of dance, in spite of her own statementabout childhood freedom, and all these practices were important in creating her unique style.はじめにモダンダンスの創始者イザドラ・ダンカンは、20世紀初頭、独自の舞踊を編み出し、世界各地で自らの舞踊思想を基に数多くの公演活動を行った。その結果、当時の多くの芸術家、知識人、批評家たちから称賛と高い評価を受け、自身の舞踊を芸術という領域に高めることに成功し、舞踊界のみならず、当時の文化、社会にまで多大な影響を与えることになった。しかしながら、イザドラ独自の舞踊形成過程についてこれまで曖昧で不明確な点が多く、とりわけ、彼女が幼少期にどのような舞踊教育を受け、その後いかに初期の舞踊を形成したのかについては詳細な研究がなされてこなかった。本論文は、これまで開示されることがなかったイザドラの末裔所蔵の兄レイモンドの覚書と当時の新聞記事、雑誌などの一次史料を基に、19世紀末のアメリカにおけるイザドラの初期活動に焦点をあて、これまで不明瞭であったイザドラの舞踊の形成と公演活動の詳細について、彼女の家族の活動にも触れながら考察し明確にする。1.イザドラの家系と生い立ちイザドラの父ジョゼフは先祖にウィリアム・ダンカン将軍(1)がいるなど、フィラデルフィアの由緒ある一族の出身で、ニューオーリンズの新聞社(2)に勤めた後、1849年にカリフォルニアに移り、実業家となった。芸術愛好家であった父ジョセフは、美術協会の会75
